팥중이 (Oedaleus infernalis)

팥중이는 메뚜기과 곤충으로, 몸빛이 갈색과 회갈색 무늬를 띠어 돌이나 흙바닥 위에서 눈에 잘 띄지 않는 위장 효과를 가지고 있습니다. 강하게 발달한 뒷다리로 멀리 뛰어 이동하며, 여름에서 가을 사이 들판이나 농경지 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있습니다.

흔한 곤충이지만 자세히 보면 섬세한 무늬와 자연에 적응한 모습이 돋보이는 매력을 지니고 있습니다.

This is a close-up of a grasshopper (Oedaleus infernalis), known in Korea as “Patjungi”. Its earthy brown and gray body patterns provide excellent camouflage, allowing it to blend seamlessly into rocks, soil, and farmland paths. Equipped with strong hind legs, this species can leap quickly to escape predators or disturbances.

Found in fields, meadows, and rural landscapes from summer through autumn, Oedaleus infernalis is one of the most common grasshoppers in Korea. Though often overlooked, its subtle markings and natural adaptations highlight the beauty of even the most ordinary insects in our environment.
