These mushrooms are Pholiota squarrosa, commonly called the shaggy scalycap. They usually grow in clusters at the base of living hardwoods or on decaying stumps, feeding as wood-decay fungi. Their caps are covered with sharp, spiky scales in shades of yellow to brown, giving them their distinctive “shaggy” look.
While technically considered edible, they are tough, fibrous, and not especially tasty, so they are not sought after as food. Instead, they are admired for their striking appearance, making them a fascinating subject for nature walks and photography.
In the forest, Pholiota squarrosa plays an important role in breaking down wood and recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem — a reminder that every small organism contributes to the larger balance of the natural world.
