가시오갈피 (Eleutherococcus senticosus)

두릅나무과에 속하는 낙엽관목으로, 줄기에 날카로운 가시가 있고 손바닥처럼 다섯 갈래로 갈라진 잎이 특징이다. 여름에는 연한 자주색 꽃이 피며, 가을이 되면 검은 보라색의 둥근 열매가 송이로 맺혀 특유의 광택을 띤다.

흔히 ‘가시오가피’라고 부르지만, 맞춤법상 ‘가시오갈피’가 표준어이다. ‘오갈피’는 ‘오(五, 다섯)’와 ‘갈피(잎이 갈라진 모양)’에서 유래해, ‘다섯 갈래로 갈라진 잎을 가진 식물’이라는 뜻을 지닌다.

뿌리와 줄기는 예로부터 한약재로 이용되어 왔으며, 피로 회복, 면역력 강화, 혈압 조절 등 다양한 효능으로 알려져 있다. 단, 열매는 생으로 섭취할 경우 독성이 있으므로 반드시 말리거나 가공해 사용해야 한다.

Eleutherococcus senticosus, commonly known as Siberian ginseng, is a spiny deciduous shrub belonging to the Araliaceae family. Its leaves are divided into five lobes, and in autumn, the plant bears glossy black clusters of berries. Although it is often called “Gasiogapi” in Korea, the correct standard spelling is “Gasiogalpi.” The term “ogalpi” means “five-parted leaf.” The roots and stems have long been used in traditional medicine to boost vitality and immunity, but the raw berries are mildly toxic and should be processed before use.
